Anything and everything is game in this blog! Posts range from what it is like to live with a teenager to how to medicate a guinea pig. In between are sometimes notes about raising a child with Down syndrome....the hard times and the happy times. There are lots of happy times!

Spring Break 2012
The girls have been on Spring Break this week, so we went camping at the first of the week. We went to Talbot Island State Park, which is just south of Amelia Island. Even though it is just two to three hours north of where we live, it is very different from Melbourne. And very beautiful! Below are some pictures from the trip.

Nature Post........Tiny Turtle
We found the tiniest turtle in our pool this week. He was about the size of a quarter. The kids put him in a bucket and watched him for a little while, then they released him into the pond behind the house. I hope he will make it out there in the great big world!

Know Me First
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day! What better time to get the word out there that Down syndrome is not the horrible syndrome that is described in the medical papers of twenty years ago. When we found out prenatally that Rachel had Down syndrome, the geneticist gave me several packets of information about Down syndrome that were nothing but doom and gloom. I am so glad that I had knowledge from my nursing experiences to know that information was outdated, but what I would have given to have information about what to really expect. I wanted to talk to moms who were in the trenches. I wanted to know what Rachel was going to be like at three years, at six years, at twenty years.
Just recently we were contacted by Know Me First, a website that has been created to be that source of information. To provide expectant parents a glimpse into the real world of Down syndrome. It is a beautiful site with lots of good information and resources to help parents make an informed decision about termination of a Down syndrome pregnancy. So many people are afriad of Down syndrome. They are so afraid that they choose to terminate their babies instead of bringing them into this world. When I first started writing this blog I hoped that it might help someone make a better informed choice about continuing a pregnancy. I wanted that someone to realize that Down syndrome is not what some doctors want you to think. I wanted to show that having a child with Down syndrome can be such a rewarding experience. This site does just that, and does it is in a very beautiful way. Go check out Know Me First and pass it along. It just may help someone make a life changing decision. A decision that could bring them more happiness than they ever knew possible! And while you are at it, check out the pictures in the 6-12 year olds. That is where you will find Rachel's picture!

Looks Can Be Deceiving
They look sweet and innocent, don't they?!? Well....they are sweet. Innocent, they are not! Cookie has turned into a pretty good dog. We had problems early on with him wanting to to get food off of the table and he even pee'd on the table, yes you heard that right! But for the most part he doesn't give us problems, anymore. Snoopie on the other hand is driving my crazy. He is all puppy.....full of energy, bouncing of everything (literally), wanting to play or chew on something all the time, and still trying to figure out that he is not supposed to pee in the house. Just when I comment on the fact that he has has not had an accident in the house in a while, he turns around and does just that. Last weekend, he proceeded to pee in the floor not 12 inches from where I was standing. I hope one day he figures it out, because claeaning up after him has gotten old. I still have no idea what prompted me to bring that little guy home in November. It was like I was watching myself do something I knew I shouldn't, but I could not stop myself. Cookie is enjoying having a buddy, though. Looking into those big brown eyes makes it almost seem worth it. It is hard to imagine that both of these little guys were once wandering the streets alone. They are a pain in the a$$#%, but we love them just the same.

More Rachel Photos
Here are some recent photos that Rahcel has taken. She loves to take pictures of her toys (i.e. her Goovy Girls, her iPad) and of our house. Sometimes we, her family, actually make it into one of her pieces of work. No matter the composition, her pictures are always fun to look at. The last several pictures were taken at my dad's when we visited right after Christmas.
